CodeSignal Launches Industry-First Agentic Coding Assessments for AI-Era Engineering Hiring
New assessments evaluate how candidates produce real work with AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex, as new research shows 9 in 10 engineers already rely on them
CodeSignal, the leading AI-native skills platform, launched agentic coding assessments, a new category of technical hiring evaluation designed to measure what engineers can build when working with agentic AI tools, an increasingly important requirement as they become embedded in everyday software development.
A new CodeSignal survey of 450 U.S. software engineers conducted in March 2026 reveals just how dramatically the profession has shifted:
- 91% of engineers report using agentic AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) in their work
- 75% have shipped production code partially or primarily generated with AI in the last six months
- 73% believe engineers who don’t adopt these tools risk becoming less competitive; 30% say that shift will come within the next year
- 56% would be hesitant to hire or work with an engineer who doesn’t know how to use agentic AI coding tools

The new assessments from CodeSignal mirror how engineers increasingly work today. Instead of solving isolated algorithm problems, candidates are asked to:
- Extract and interpret product or technical requirements
- Use agentic AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex to build a working solution
- Explain their technical decisions and reasoning to a human reviewer
“Software development has fundamentally changed,” said Tigran Sloyan, Co-Founder and CEO of CodeSignal. “Engineers are no longer coding alone; they’re working with AI agents, and the best ones know how to get the most out of them. The companies that figure out how to hire for—and develop—those skills will have a real advantage.”
Interest in AI-integrated technical evaluations has accelerated quickly. Over the past six months, tens of thousands of candidates have completed CodeSignal’s AI-assisted coding assessments, and roughly one-third of CodeSignal customers adopted an AI-assisted format during 2025.
The agentic coding assessment launch is the latest expansion of CodeSignal’s growing assessment library. The platform measures real job skills across both technical and business roles, spanning everything from software engineering to sales, marketing, finance, HR, and operations.
