Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) reopened today after remaining closed for 34 days due to student protests.
The university was declared shut indefinitely on August 31 following the protest.
The students started demonstration after outsiders allegedly assaulted a section of students on the campus when they were demonstrating for a unified degree combining the Faculty of Animal Husbandry and the Faculty of Veterinary Science. At least seven students were injured in the incident.
In response, the university authorities also ordered the indefinite closure of residential halls, asking students to vacate them the following day.
A probe committee was subsequently formed to investigate the alleged attack, and several meetings were held by the university administration in an effort to minimise the crisis.
“While the activities of the university started today, the residential halls opened on October 3. The students have returned to their respective halls,” BAU Proctor Prof Md Abdul Alim told The Daily Star.
He said teachers have already held multiple meetings regarding the students’ demands, and a positive outcome is expected soon.
“We are waiting for a positive resolution from the university authorities regarding our demands,” said Mahmud Hasan Dipu, a fourth-year student of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry.
