The news that Siemens AG acquired Altair Engineering Inc. was not as much a surprise as it was a flashback. Earlier this year at Hannover Messe, Germany, a visit to Altair’s booth got me thinking about how their computational science and AI solutions might really give Siemens a run for its money. Little did I

New Delhi,UPDATED: Nov 19, 2024 17:47 IST
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is hosting a free one-day course on machine learning applications in ecological studies on November 27.
Open to researchers, academicians, and students, the course offers valuable insights into deep learning techniques and their impact on ecology. Participants will also receive a free e-certificate upon completion.
Deep learning, a subset of artificial intelligence, is revolutionising ecological research. ISRO’s programme, conducted through the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) outreach facility, focuses on demonstrating how deep learning tools can aid in tasks like vegetation classification, deforestation monitoring, species identification, and habitat mapping. The course will also feature case studies to highlight practical applications.
The aim? To familiarise participants with the utility of advanced machine learning techniques for tackling ecological challenges like climate prediction and sustainable management.
ISRO COURSE ELIGIBILITY AND PERKS
Designed for graduates and above, the course is ideal for those studying or working in ecology, environmental sciences, geospatial technology, or vegetation studies.
The best part? There’s no registration fee, and all attendees will receive an e-certificate for participation, making it a win-win for learners.
HOW TO APPLY
The course is set to take place via the IIRS e-class portal. With IIRS having already conducted over 163 successful outreach programmes involving 5.8 lakh participants from more than 3,200 institutions, this initiative is expected to garner significant interest.

WHY THIS ISRO COURSE MATTERS
Deep learning techniques like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can identify patterns in large datasets, enabling innovations like:
- Tracking long-term deforestation trends
- Mapping vegetation types with precision
- Identifying plant and animal species through satellite images
This free workshop by ISRO is not just a learning opportunity but a step toward empowering researchers with tools to understand and preserve the natural world.
